When you become a parent, you need to buy all of a sudden a lot of baby products that you have little knowledge about. However, you need to find up-to-speed a way to select products of good quality that are safe and meet well the baby’s needs. Below is a list of baby gear item that you need to get and a few tips to keep in mind when purchasing them.
- Crib. This is the place where your baby will stay most of the time and you need to make sure that this is a safe environment. Check that the cribs is stable, that it is made of non-toxic glues, low VOC paints and so on. If you buy a crib from a reputable company, they make sure they respect strict safety standards, so it is better to go for brands for this type of product. In order to avoid unnecessary expenses, you can chose a multi functional crib that is supposed to serve you and your baby until (s)he is three years old.
- Crib Mattress. Safety is again your main concern here and the basic rules are to choose a firm mattress and to make sure it fits the crib well, so that there are no space between the crib and the mattress where your baby could accidentally slip-in. The firmness is needed to avoid the baby suffocation hazard. There are a lot of good brands out there, such as Sealy, Serta, Colgate, Simmons and so on.
- Baby sheets and blankets. As your baby will be in direct contact with these, choose comfortable soft materials to keep your baby happy. If your little one has any history with allergic reactions, consider going for organic and hypoallergenic products.
- Baby Clothing. A good idea is to go for items that are slightly bigger than the current size of your baby. In the beginning, babies have an amazing growth rate and this will enable you to use the clothes for longer. Cotton should be in general the material of choice. In terms of socks and shoes, these should fit right and be comfortable. The baby doesn’t even need shoes in the beginning though. Take care to buy shoes that allow the little one’s feet to breathe.
- Toys. Your baby will have a lot of moments when (s)he is crying and needs soothing. This is when toys specifically designed to pacify your love are a must.
- Baby Swing. This is a great invention to calm down babies during the day and put them to sleep easier at night. They rock the baby and have a lot of other features, depending on the specific model you consider. Choose a swing that is well suited to your needs in terms of size, portability, features and so on.
- Changing Diaper Set. When choosing diapers, diaper mat and wipes, go for natural ones, made without harsh artificial substances.
